The infected raging woman then attacks another man and it is implied they are all massacred and killed off camera.Ĭountless people are shown dead in a church. The woman then suddenly turns around and vomits blood all over the floor before spitting and flinging the blood all over another man’s face. He bites at her neck before another man runs up and beats it with a blunt object. The scene is quite sad.ĭuring an extremely fast paced sequence, a woman is attacked by a raging chimpanzee. The footage is extremely realistic, if not real, and very distressing.Īn ape is shown with his organs exposed along with many others being experimented on in different ways. People are shown flailing around on fire, wailing in agony and rioting with shields and massive crowds. The film opens with abrupt distressing footage of a woman who appears to be holding a dead baby, a man being beaten while hung from some sort of wire, a man hung from a noose by his neck while being viscously beaten by a crowd with chairs and being punched around. During these scenes, the erratic and extremely fast paced movements of the camera brutalizes it instead of shying away from detail.ĭead bodies of people and zombies are shown strewn around throughout the film with visible blood. There is loads of strong violence throughout this film against humans and zombie-like humans. There is also lots of language, scenes with non-sexual nudity and scenes with strong threat of rape and sexual violence which does not happen fully. Most of, if not more than 3/4ths of the violence is against humans and it is all very realistic, abrupt and graphic but not over the top and disgusting. While many may assume this to be a zombie film, in many ways it is not.

In short, it's the only zombie movie that actually follows the convention of a monster movie, in that the monster is introduced and then the characters try to figure out how to combat it, implement strategies and possibly triumph by the end.28 Days Later (2002) follows a man suddenly awoken in the aftermath of an apocalypse where a virus called “rage” was unleashed. It was the first movie to introduce the zombie trope of hungering for brains, and had fast zombies nearly 20 years before they became the "exciting new trend".Īs an actual monster movie, it's the only one concerned with figuring out how to actually stop the zombies, and it turns out nuking them only makes the problem much, much worse (wonder if Zak considered that?). They aren't an allegory for consumer greed or suburban apathy, they are an unstoppable supernatural terror all their own. They can't be dispatched with a simple shot to the head. Return of the Living Dead is the only one where the zombies are an actually supernatural menace. They are all about how poorly humans react to disaster, and not actually about the zombies. I'd further argue that Return of the Living Dead is in fact one of, if not the only actual zombie movie.Īll of the others are allegorical disaster films in which the real monster is other humans. It's made much worse by the fact that the lead is actually a really good actress amongst a cast of people who give a performance that's about on par with The Room but without the absurd charm of the latter.

The worst, though, you probably haven't seen and if you haven't, KEEP IT THAT WAY, but a TV show called Van Helsing. When you do that, instead of me enjoying them, when he turned up in Invincible I just found it horribly jarring. Great as Pimento in Brooklyn 99, funny to see him again as Derek in The Good Place, but he always plays the exact same character, incredulously abrasive with an over the top voice. It's actually the same thing with Jason Mantzoukas- I'm sick of seeing him in things. Johnny Depp did that for a while, I found at that point a few years after Pirates where he was in everything that I stopped seeing anyone but Johnny Depp, him as Willy Wonka was a fucking atrocity. Annoyingly written characters are one thing, but nothing hurts worse than when the people portraying the characters on screen just seem like someone who took a few shitty drama classes- though it can come from quite good actors. That's one of the things that really irks me in some movies, you just have actors being actors, rather than forgetting who they are.
